Meet Maayan. If you’ve swooned at the sight (and taste!) of her dreamy candy creations that take on the form of anything—from jewelry (especially her signature rings) to crystals, to cassette tapes and more—then you know Maayan. The multi-disciplinary designer and artist deftly spins her creativity into magic with her own candy brand Sweet Saba as well as collaborations with a multitude of art, fashion and luxury brands, and you might have also seen Maayan herself work the Batsheva runway at NY Fashion Week. Who are you?
Maayan Zilberman. I'm an artist, I've worked with sugar for a long time and more recently with resins, foam, and viscous liquids. I'm Mom to 5yr old Freddie. She's my best assistant and we design her outfits together.
What’s on your mind?
How to be more fluid and how to translate more of what's on my mind into 3 + 4 dimensions.
Where are you right now?
At a drawing table in my Dumbo art studio facing the river, waiting for some resins to set enough before I can manipulate them.
Who are your heroes?
People who can keep a minimal home—where's your stuff, like truly. Elegant women in Rome, bitchy badass women in Brooklyn, hilarious women in London, sharp & intuitive women in Mexico, basically all the coolest women who have shaped how I live & parent.
Why do you do what you do?
I like taking something inherently feminine (& defined as such) and subverting it...I love the experience of witnessing surprise, delight, or arousal when people interact with my work—it makes me feel connected in ways I don't always feel comfortable without the art being the catalyst.
What is your favorite thing to drink?
Really sharp seltzer or soft cucumber water.
What is your favorite thing to eat?
A small hill of mashed potatoes with a little gravy pond & a few peas floating in the middle.
