CHECKING IN: TWA Hotel
Let’s check in and check out this decidedly swanky sixties-inspired hotel at New York’s JFK Airport, shall we?
THE WHERE:
JFK Airport, NYC
THE WHAT:
The old TWA terminal at JFK—designed in the 60’s by legendary architect and designer Eero Saarinen is a mid-century sculptural masterpiece—its swooping architecture and now-retro futurist vistas are a time capsule to another era. But, since 2019, the once-abandoned terminal has been given a high-polish and decidedly fun sheen in the form of the TWA Hotel.
THE WHEN:
Practically speaking, a stay at the TWA Hotel is perfect for those early morning flights as it’s linked directly to the Jet Blue Terminal and a quick ride away to the other terminals. However, you might want to rest your head in one of the rooms for more than one night. The authentically retro rooms feature all the modern conveniences, multiple bars and an eye-popping rooftop infinity pool with views of the tarmac, a museum (and a photo booth to boot).
The YUM:
Start off with a drink at ‘Connie’, a Lockheed Constellation L-1649A plane transformed into a cocktail lounge. Then, have dinner at Jean-Georges Vongerichten’s Paris Café for globally-inspired crowd pleasers like Crispy Salmon Sushi, Fish and Chips and Bittersweet Chocolate Pudding. Have a nightcap at the grand Sunken Lounge, or head upstairs to the Pool Bar.
Whet your Whistle: Jet Fuel featuring Cucumber Mint Vodka, Aperol, Fresh Lemon Juice and Mint
The WHY?:
Cause it’s fun for everyone—design/architecture buffs, kids, foodies and aviation geeks alike!
