On picturesque and historic Christopher street in the West Village, you’ll find a well-appointed Art Deco-influenced barber shop, where Michael and his team work their magic. (I should know— Mike is responsible for the locks of yours truly!) A native third-generation New Yorker, Mike is what New York is all about. A devote of dapper retro style, you’ll instantly recognize him by his two-toned brogues, natty suspenders and sharp fedoras. And when you sit in his chair you’ll be awed by his scissor wizardry.
Founded in 2017, Haar and Co. provides his customers a moment of escape and pampering when they enter. A quality cut? No doubt. A curated array of grooming products and accessories available to buy? Definitely. His cool playlists on repeat? Yup. But the feeling when you leave Haar and Co. (with your snappy new cut) is that Michael has created a singularly unique neighborhood shop with great service, a friendly smile and a whole lotta flair. In my Chelsea apt. in New York City.
When did you start?
I launched my business in early Fall of 2017. I've been cutting hair + making strangers listen to music since 2006.
Why do you do what you do?
Because I wouldn't know what else to do with myself. I've always enjoyed my work. I actually love working. I've always been my own little mobile party that seems to whisk others up into it like a cyclone.
